Queer Food Bank

The Queer Food Bank (QFB) operates a low- and no-barrier food bank serving queer and transgender community members in London, Ontario. Grounded in principles of equity and harm reduction, we provide a safe, affirming space where individuals can access not only nutritious food, but also community resources, connection, and support. Our approach recognizes that food insecurity is closely linked to broader social and health inequities, and we work to reduce those impacts through inclusive, dignity-centered service.

To ensure equitable access, QFB has intentionally removed common barriers to service. We do not require proof of address or identification, recognizing that many participants live in temporary or unstable housing. We know that identification documents may not reflect the chosen names or gender identities of transgender individuals. We offer delivery for participants who are unable to attend in person and provide bus tickets to ensure safe and reliable access to our services. At QFB, we operate from a foundation of trust, meeting people where they are and without judgment.

The food we provide is nutrient-dense and often otherwise inaccessible to the people we serve, including fresh fruits and vegetables, fresh and frozen protein options, and essential pantry staples. By prioritizing nutritious, culturally appropriate, and preferred foods, we directly support improved physical health outcomes, including better nutrition, increased food security, and reduced reliance on emergency or low-quality food sources. We accommodate dietary needs related to allergies, religious practices, and personal preferences, and offer substitutions whenever possible to ensure food is both usable and valued.

In addition to food, QFB provides essential household and personal care items that are critical to health, dignity, and well-being. These include paper products, menstrual supplies, toiletries, and gender-affirming items such as shampoo, shaving cream, and razors. We also provide laundry pods to support access to clean clothing. These supports contribute to both physical and mental health outcomes by promoting hygiene, reducing stress, and affirming identity; particularly for transgender participants who may face barriers accessing gender-affirming products elsewhere.

Our space is intentionally welcoming and trauma-informed. Participants are offered a hot or cold drink, a snack if needed, and a comfortable place to wait. Volunteers are available to check in, provide peer support, and foster a sense of belonging. We maintain up-to-date community resource information and offer assistance with completing forms or attending appointments, helping to reduce barriers to accessing broader health and social services.

QFB is entirely volunteer-run, with a team that includes 2SLGBTQIA+ community members as well as parents, siblings, and grandparents of queer and trans individuals. This community-rooted model strengthens trust, reduces stigma, and enhances our ability to respond to emerging needs. Our work recognizes that improving health outcomes extends beyond food provision; it includes reducing isolation, affirming identity, and fostering meaningful connection. At QFB, we are committed to advancing equity, supporting well-being, and ensuring that every person who accesses our services feels seen, valued, and supported.
